A professor at the University of Missouri – Columbia has filed a lawsuit against the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania police department for damaging her hearing during a protest demonstration.

The Columbia Daily Tribune reports Karen Piper was a visiting professor at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh at the time of a protest outside a G-20 world economics meeting.

She says she was at the demonstration to do research on a book.

Professor Piper says when she asked Pittsburgh police for the best way away from the demonstration, an officer told her to walk toward what turned out to be a Long Range Acoustic Device that police use to produce painful sound to break up a demonstration.

The professor says she was given no warning and suffered permanent nerve damage.

She’s suing in federal court for the cost of her medical expenses and for lost income
